The Foundation

The „Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe“ consists of the field of steles and the information center; together, they commemorate up to six million Jewish victims of the holocaust.

Especially for young people, the permanent exhibit under the Field of Steles is the centerpiece of the Memorial. Some of the exhibit spaces dedicated to specific topics are constantly updated and completed, for example the Room of Places and the virtual portal to places of commemoration all over Europe. A special and necessary task in terms of the politics of remembrance is the expansion of  the Room of Names, in order to present as many biographies of the three million known victims as possible.

The necessary research is elaborate and complicated, as the historic background of the persecution and annihilation must be explored in detail, in order to describe the life of a person – inasmuch as it can be reconstructed at all – in a few sentences. This part of the Foundation’s work is financed exclusively through donations acquired by the Association.

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

After years of debate, on June 25, 1999, the German Parliament resolved with a great majority from the entire party spectrum to erect a memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe. In order to carry out the resolution, to plan and implement the field of steles and the information center, a public-law foundation was created as of April 6, 2000, reporting to the Federal Government: the Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

Between April 2003 and May 2005, the Foundation supervised the construction of the Memorial, and it now runs the Memorial as a place of commemoration, education and encounter. The law underlying the Foundation also obligates it to work towards “commemorating all victims of National Socialism and to ensure that they are honored appropriately” and to point towards the “authentic sites of commemoration”.
