Károly Baumann lived in Nagy-Szalonta, in northern Transsylvania. When the region fell under Hungarian control in 1940, the oppression of the Jewish population began. The Hungarian government drafted young Jewish men into forced labour. In June 1944, after German troops occupied Hungary, the SS deported the remaining Jewish population to the ghetto of Oradea, and from there to Auschwitz. It's highly probable that Károly Baumann was among them.
