Edit Gerő

ermordet 1944 in Auschwitz-Birkenau (VL)

Edit Gerő lived in Velký Meder, a town that today is in Slovakia. She was the daughter of Ernő Gerő, a corn merchant. In November 1938 Slovakia was forced to cede the border territory to Hungary. The new authorities immediately enacted anti-Jewish measures in the town, which they now called Nagymegyer. When German troops occupied the country in early 1944, SS task commandos deported the Jews to the Auschwitz extermination camp, where almost all of them were asphyxiated with Zyklon B. Edit Gerő was among those murdered.
