Josef Majdler

Josef Majdler lived in Białystok, a center of jewish life in Poland. The town was known for its 100 small prayer houses and synagogues. Soon after the arrival of German troops in June 1941 a ghetto was established. The Jewish Council in Białystok managed to turn the ghetto into an important centre of the textile industry, which at first protected the Jews from deportation. Despite armed resistance of the inmates, in 1943 the SS deported 25,000 Jews to the extermination camps at Auschwitz, Treblinka and Majdanek. Josef Majdler was never seen again. He was 12 years old.
