Klara Sion

Klara Sion lived in the Greek city of Saloniki. The city was the centre of Sephardic Jewry. When the Wehrmacht occupied Saloniki in April 1941, the city was home to 50,000 Jews. In March 1943, the Berlin-based Reich Security Head Office commenced with its deportation of the Jews. Klara Sion was forced to resettle in a large ghetto near the railway station and was eventually deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp, at the latest in August 1943. The SS murdered most of the deportees immediately after their arrival in the camp, with poison gas. Klara Sion did not survive the extermination camp.
