Lea Pollak

Lea Pollak wurde am 2. Juli 1925 in der slowakischen Hauptstadt Bratislava geboren. Die Slowakei war während des Zweiten Weltkriegs ein Satellitenstaat Nazideutschlands und beteiligte sich aktiv an den Deportationen in die deutschen Vernichtungslager. Die SS deportierte Lea Pollak am 28. März 1942 in das KZ Auschwitz. Die junge Frau überlebte dort über zwei Jahre. Im Winter 1944/45 wurde sie zur Zwangsarbeit in das zum KZ Ravensbrück gehörende Außenlager Retzow-Rechlin in Mecklenburg verschleppt. Dort musste sie auf dem militärischen Flugplatz Lärz unter katastrophalen Bedingungen Schwerstarbeit leisten. Am 24. April, wenige Tage vor der Befreiung des Lagers, starb Lea Pollak infolge der Strapazen der Zwangsarbeit und der unmenschlichen Zustände im Lager. Sie war 19 Jahre alt.

Lea Pollak was born on July 2nd, 1925 in Bratislava, now the capital of Slovakia. The Slovak Republic was a client state of Nazi Germany during World War Two, and actively participated in the deportations to German extermination camps The SS deported Lea Pollak on March 28th, 1942 to Auschwitz concentration camp. There, the young woman survived for two years. In the winter of 1944 to 1945 the Nazis took her as a forced labourer to Retzow-Rechlin in Mecklenburg, Germany, a satellite camp of Ravensbrück concentration camp. There, she had to perform hard labour under disastrous conditions at Lärz military airfield. On April 24th, 1945, a few days before the camp was liberated, Lea Pollak died as a result of the exertions of the work she was forced to do and the appalling conditions in the camp. She was 19 years old.
