Sura Łaja Tenenbaum wurde am 25. Oktober 1885 in Warschau geboren. Die polnische Hauptstadt beherbergte damals die größte jüdische Gemeinde Europas. Mit dem Einmarsch deutscher Truppen im September 1939 begann die schrittweise Entrechtung und Ausbeutung der Juden Warschaus. Im Oktober 1940 riegelten die Besatzer einen Teil der Stadt ab und erklärten ihn zum Ghetto für über 400.000 Juden. Die Lebensbedingungen dort waren katastrophal. Hunger und Krankheiten forderten zahlreiche Opfer. Sura Łaja Tenenbaum starb am 31. Oktober 1941. Sie wurde 56 Jahre alt.

Sura Łaja Tenenbaum was born on 25 October 1885 in Warsaw. At the time, the Polish capital was home to Europe’s largest Jewish community. The arrival of German troops in September 1939 marked the start of the gradual deprivation of rights and property of the Jewish population of Warsaw. In October 1940 the occupying authority cordoned off a part of the city and established a ghetto there for more than 400,000 Jews. The living conditions there were catastrophic. Hunger and disease claimed the lives of many. Sura Łaja Tenenbaum died on 31 October 1941. She was 56 years old.
