Josef Welt wurde 1923 als Sohn von Martin und Sara Welt in Jassy geboren. Josef wuchs in der Stadt im Norden Rumäniens heran. Am 29. Juni 1941 fand dort das bis dahin größte Pogrom Rumäniens statt. Mehrere Tausend Juden wurden auf das Gelände des Polizeiquartiers getrieben, wo rumänische und deutsche Soldaten auf sie schossen. Der Schüler Josef war unter den Überlebenden, die ohne Verpflegung in versiegelte Viehwaggons gesperrt und ziellos durch das Land gefahren wurden. Wahrscheinlich starb er in Folge der strapaziösen Fahrt am 1. Juli 1941. Josef Welt war 18 Jahre alt.

Josef Welt was born in 1923 in Iaşi. His parents were Martin and Sara Welt. Josef grew up in this northern Romanian town, which on 29 June 1941 was the scene of Romania’s most devastating pogrom to that point. Several thousand Jews were rounded up on the site of the police station, where Romanian and German soldiers shot at them. Josef, still a schoolboy, was among the survivors. They were locked into cattle cars and transported through the country, with no provisions. He probably died as a result of this grueling journey on 1 July 1941. Josef Welt was 18 years old.
